Romeo Must Not Die– Why Barack Obama Is Still the Man for the Job

I would go back to bed to try to deal with my wearying insomnia and grab an hour or two before dawn, but we are at an ungodly hour in this country.  With the pernicious abandonment of a prairie fire, the Obstructionists and disillusionists we once knew as the GOP are criss-crossing the country making things up, aided and abetted by Sarah Palin and the cluster Fox-folks.  They want everyone to believe that we made a huge and irremediable mistake in electing Barack Obama in ’08.

We did not.  We the people had a surge of vision and imagination; we dared to dream and believe and we gathered in front of our televisions and millions strong on the Washington Mall to see him inaugurated.

When he became the Democratic  nominee, Obama went abroad to connect with those who had come to mistrust us– as a matter of principle and vision.  For that he was later to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Faced with the near collapse of the economy, he commandeered the”bail-out” and the stimulus packages.  It’s my impression that there were few alternatives and that this was the only way to keep the country from falling apart.

Then came health care reform.  Obama aggressively reached across the aisle, including last winter’s breakfasts on Capitol Hill where his efforts at dialogue  were repudiated by snide posturing GOP boors framing questions as accusations and blame.  He stood in front of the country and alluded to numerous concessons to Republicans written into the Bill, and yet on every network is the word “Obamacare,” cast as everything scarey and wrong and nothing good and right to the American people.  Right wing pundits would have you believe that he didn’t listen to them or try to work with the GOP– but remember when they called him a liar to his face?

After that, he came back and rallied the Democrats to pass an immensely important and historic measure–Health Care Reform– most assuredly a boon and a victory that no one else has been able to effect.

He was wrestled to the ground by his Joint Chiefs and would not otherwise have sent more troops to Afghanistan.  This was surely far more than an olive branch to the conservatives.  Bob Woodward’s book Obama’s Wars reveals a troubled President left high and dry by the Joint Chiefs, who refused to give him alternative scenarios or give him a staged withdrawal plan.  He drew it up himself sweating bullets.

In the wake of the Deep Water Horizon crisis he sat BP execs down and wrested a commitment of 2 billion from them– as real money deposited in real banks then and there, to help the beleagured.

Most recently Obama reinstituted peace talks between the Israelies and the Palestinians– a huge accomplishment.

He has conducted himself like a true statesman, traveling to and holding summits on pressing issues.  He has responded to the bashing he has taken including the absurd claims made about his religion and his citizenship with far more equanimity and dignity than most of us can even fathom.

In short, Barack Obama hit the ground running and he hasn’t stopped even though, time and perspective will demonstrate, the price of being the first African American president is to be the victim of racism as it routinely spews forth from the mouths of the Right. We would not have done to Hillary Clinton what we have done to this man, crucifying him daily.

Presidents don’t become presidents without politics and becoming politicians themselves.  We didn’t elect God to the presidency; we elected a mere mortal, with feet of clay.  But many of us demand perfection, and are immensely unforgiving– especially white middle-aged men who project their own self-hate and moral failings on Obama.

George W. Bush sat around in the Oval Office for eight years doing nothing, because he didn’t know how.  We elected an oilman puppet to lead us, whose puppeteers were Karl Rove and Dick Cheney– the two hidden presidents and master blacksmiths of their era with their ability to turn the hot metal of the truth into horseshoes. Running the country was their game.

If the GOP gets Congress back, they say they’ll repeal “Obamacare” and the right to health care, those things like doing away with preexisting conditions clauses and kids being on their parents’ policies until they’re twenty-six and other measures in the bill to insure the uninsured, when the insurance companies underpinning the capitalist system, in collusion with Wall Street, refused to step up.

If you see an ad contending that “Obamacare” entitles convicted rapists to free Viagra, research that.  See if it’s really true.

Before anyone buys into the spew of rhetoric coming out of the mouths of the Republicans and their first cousins the Tea Party, he should do exactly what I’ve done here– see if he can come up with anything Barack Obama has done for America.

You might have to put up a blog, get up at three a.m.  foaming at the mouth, a silly headline dancing in your head.

Here Comes the Crunch….

Barack Obama-AAG-007689.jpg

A big heart, a brilliant mind.

One of our greatest faculties is the ability to project our fears upon other people and circumstances and mistake that for reality. Maureen Dowd, writing in the NYT, had this to say recently:

“Just as some Americans once feared that John Fitzgerald Kennedy (who was a Catholic) would build a tunnel to Rome, now some fear that Barack Hussein Obama (whose name sounds scary) will build a tunnel to Mecca.

In “Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds,” a history of such national follies as England’s South Sea Bubble and Holland’s Tulip Frenzy, the Scottish historian Charles Mackay observed: “Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one.”

He also concluded that people are more prone to believe the “Wondrously False” than the “Wondrously True.””

Well, here comes the Crunch, the Clutch, the Crush– the Follies and all of their petty would-be saints.

Those of us who believe that in putting Obama into office we did a good thing for the country and the world need to read the Media Matters debunking of Forbes‘ spurious article published last week.

This piece in MM provides terrific, grounded and founded arguments  against the theory that Barack Obama is some anti-American subversive who somehow ended up in the White House.

Every time Sara Palin puts on a clean pair of panty-hose she robotically pronounces Obama as a “socialist”– this, evidently, with no idea of what socialism is and what it is not. Unbelievably, we’re still hearing from “birthers” and Obamaphobists who think the President is a Muslim– as if that were a huge mark against him.

Thanks to Obamaphobia, Limbaugh, Beck and company have hijacked any residual circumspection on the part of the Far Right and trumpet across the air waves that the America you knew and loved has been stolen from you.

Put on your flak jackets and hit the streets.  All we have to arm ourselves with is the truth, and believe me, it’s out there– the Media Matters piece would be a good starting point for flyers and posts nation-wide.  The base that rolled up its sleeves and swayed public opinion in favor of a good, decent and brilliant human being, on the theory that we need such a person in the Oval Office, needs to get going.

The Obama-phobic coterie of blowhards intending to sweep the November elections  has neither the depth of intellect, the prowess, or the balls to lead a march, much less hold office and reasonably, rationally, represent a constituency.

Barack Obama has kept his promises to us, but we’re letting him down.  We needed, for the past two years, an America that was united behind its president, not the Tea Baggers– Tea-Party/Carpet Baggers….  America the Beautiful is not suffering because of anything done by Barack Obama; it is suffering because egotistical fat men who want some semblance of power back are ejaculating lies all over everyone else and because the Democratic Party has slid back into the apathy that gave rise to eight years of a war monger in the White House.

Actually, with the Runaway General gone, we need Jack Bauer.

Rolling Stone’s piece on General Stanley McChrystal , ably and amazingly written by the savant Michael Hastings, raises quite a few questions as to why he was really fired yesterday.  For a terrific take on Runaway General, the piece, check out Harvard J’School’s the Nieman Storyboard.

I come away from it feeling that Obama, who looked and sounded like a real leader yesterday, has absolutely no grip on this war and that those who surround him don’t either.  It’s a mess.

We don’t belong in Afghanistan.  We need to get out.  Al Quaeda is in Pakistan and everywhere but Afghanistan. Karzai is a joke.

Thank God for the power and truth of story: a story that takes off the Emperor’s clothes:  Obama’s.  I’ve supported this president, viewing him as perceptive, strong, courageous.  But I don’t honestly think he understands anything about how to fight terrorism.

The piece gives me a sense of McChrystal as a total asshole much of the time, a brilliant strategist, and someone we needed in the war on terror.  I don’t like a lot of the things he has said or that he has done, especially skewing Cpl. Pat Tillman’s death.  But given his time in special ops in the worst of times, he is emblematic of the kind of Jedi that we need against the formidable centipedes that swell the ranks of Al Quaeda, hiding out in rocks and caves, eating raw mutton, crazed, delusional, infinitely more dangerous than any enemy we have ever faced before.

We’ll see if Petraeus can figure it all out and turn it around.

Meanwhile, where was Barack Obama when the first few thousand gallons of oil spewed into the Gulf and the rig blew, killing eleven men.  There’s no escaping the fact that his photo ops on the beaches seem like afterthoughts.    Can anyone bear to see one more creature dying on a live feed?

It doesn’t really feel like anyone is at the helm.  I hate to admit that any of the crazies on the Right have a sane thought, but they’ve been saying from the beginning that an ivory tower brainiac doesn’t belong in the White House.

Many of us wanted a messiah; we flocked to see Obama, and were uplifted by his oratory. He inspired us to elect him.  Now the reality check.  The viability of the big dreams and the big money poured into bail-outs, jobs, and this cursed troop surge, now hamstrung by recent mealy-mouthed directives to not take out people who “look like” civilians.

Those mushrooms growing up after all the rain, in clusters… overtaking gardens–that’s bureaucracy, which unfortunately has inevitably become synonomous with Obama.  He needs to reverse course, fast, because he’s steered us into an unwinnable war, a huge domestic mess, and in not sitting on Salazar so that Salazar would sit on that archaic minerals agency that hands out permits and lets big oil get away with shortcuts that lead to death and devastation, it feels to me that he has f****d us in the most insidious of ways– charming, disarming, smart but not smart enough.

Off the Wall and Into the Woods.

I swear to God, someone should take all of the GOP members of Congress out behind the Capitol and whip their asses until they beg for mercy.

Remember the days when people spanked children for misbehavior?  These purported grown-ups need and deserve an ass-whuppin’.

There is no valid reason to block the debate on the financial reform necessary to forestall another meltdown.

Once again the Republicans to a man and woman are engaging in obstruction rather than carrying out their mandates to make life easier on their constituents.

They are doing this because they hate Barack Obama.  They hate him because he is black, articulate, strong, courageous and has called them on their b.s.  They hate him because he is not some percocet-addled Pillsbury Doughboy spewing bullshit on talk radio as if he really has something to say.  Rush Limbaugh has poisoned more minds and hearts against Obama, dividing the country in the process, than any single individual in this country and set civility and discourse in politics back fifty years.

Meanwhile, on cluster Fox, the ultimate pasty white freak Glenn Beck said last week that parents should pull their kids out of public school before they are subjected to socialist brainwashing.  This is the guy who sees hidden messages on the outer walls of 30 Rock.  I am going to put it plainly; he speaks for the lowest most illiterate and craziest element of our society, mainly concentrated in the “deep” south.

It is fat white men with ED who despise Obama, and who are making it impossible to get anything done in Washington.   If anyone reading this has bought into the paranoid crap that has polarized this country, from the Tea Partiers to the new vigilantes on the Arizona border and the failure of reason and abdication of responsibility bringing on the immigration crisis,  here is what you should do:

Inform yourselves.  Find out the truth.  Find out that Barack Obama’s birth certificate really does state that he was born in Hawaii.  Why the hell should he have to produce the original for anyone.  He was elected by the majority of the American people and he is the President of the United States.  The paranoid lunatic right  has done everything but spit on him,  and the other day somebody in North Carolina  tried to shoot him.

Shame of shames on the new low-class, rhetoric spewing,  fulminating and irresponsible people who misrepresent themselves  for the money and power to hole up in Washington making water balloons and worse.
